Cows at three dairy farms in California, the leading milk-producing state in the U.S., have recently tested positive for bird flu, according to the state’s agriculture department. This development extends the H5N1 virus outbreak in dairy cattle to a 14th state, with over 190 herds affected nationwide since March. The outbreak has also impacted 13 dairy and poultry farm workers, as reported by federal data.

The detection of bird flu in cows, a shift from its usual avian hosts, has raised concerns about the potential for the virus to evolve and spread among humans. However, federal officials maintain that the risk to the general public remains low. They emphasize that pasteurization effectively neutralizes the virus in milk, ensuring safety for consumers.

No human cases of bird flu have been reported in California so far. The infected herds, located in the Central Valley region, began showing symptoms on August 25. Infected cows typically experience a temporary drop in milk production, which could add to the financial strain already faced by dairy farmers.

California’s agriculture secretary, Karen Ross, has acknowledged the challenging circumstances for dairy farmers and assured that the situation is being addressed with urgency. The affected dairies are under quarantine, with sick cows isolated and receiving treatment, while healthy cows are permitted to continue milk production for pasteurization.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is collaborating with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to confirm the cases and contain the virus. Efforts are ongoing to manage the outbreak and prevent further spread, with federal officials maintaining close communication with state authorities to address the situation effectively.
