Azurity Pharmaceuticals has initiated a recall of certain batches of its ADHD and narcolepsy medication, Zenzedi, following the discovery of incorrect pills within a package of the drug.

According to the recall notice issued on Wednesday, Azurity is recalling one lot of Zenzedi 30 milligram tablets after a pharmacist reported finding carbinoxamine maleate tablets, an antihistamine, in a bottle labeled as Zenzedi.

This recall comes at a time of national shortage of ADHD medications that has persisted since October 2022, adding to the confusion and uncertainty for individuals with ADHD who are already facing challenges in accessing their necessary medications.

Zenzedi contains dextroamphetamine sulfate, a stimulant used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. Carbinoxamine maleate, the antihistamine found in the mislabeled bottles, has sedative properties and counteracts the stimulant effects of dextroamphetamine sulfate, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.

People who inadvertently take carbinoxamine instead of Zenzedi face an increased risk of accidents or injuries and may experience symptoms such as drowsiness, increased eye pressure, urinary obstruction, and thyroid disorders, as stated in the recall notice.

The specific recalled lot is identified by the lot number F230169A with an expiration date of June 2025. Azurity has reported no serious injuries associated with the incorrect medication being distributed.

Consumers in possession of the recalled medication are advised to return it to their pharmacy immediately. They should also contact their healthcare provider if they experience any adverse reactions to the drug.

Individuals affected by this issue may also report problems to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
