Some major food companies are looking for the creation of meals or products tailored specifically for individuals using weight loss drugs such as Ozempic.
During their recent earnings call, executives from Nestlé disclosed plans to develop “companion products” or supplements aimed at mitigating potential muscle mass loss associated with these drugs.
These products are also intended to help prevent weight regain after users discontinue the medication.
According to The Wall Street Journal, companies like Nestlé and Abbott Labs are focusing on developing protein shakes designed to replenish nutrients for users of these drugs, particularly as their popularity grows.
Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are primarily used to manage Type 2 diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels and have also demonstrated efficacy in promoting weight loss.
Health experts explain that these medications work by suppressing appetite, leading to a feeling of fullness. Nutritionist Sam Tejada noted to NewsNation that specialized food products for individuals on these drugs could prove beneficial.
“When you’re on medications like Wegovy or Ozempic, you can’t just consume anything,” Tejada explained.
“Consuming high-carb or sugary foods may cause discomfort due to how the medication interacts with insulin production. Therefore, having pre-prepared foods and meals that avoid these high-sugar, high-carb, and greasy foods is definitely a significant positive.”
