‘An Apple A Day Keeps A Doctor Away’- Fact or Myth?

Benefits of apples

Since childhood, we have heard this adage umpteen number of times. But have you ever wondered who coined this term and when? For the unversed, this term has its origin that dates back to the 19th century. Magazines such as Queries and Notes were the ones that published this saying for the first time. With the goodness of nutrients such as vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, apples can never disappoint us regarding health benefits. We know that apples can do wonders to our health, but can apple consumption have its side effects too? Can apple alone keep you away from a doctor? Come with us as we dig into how truthful this claim is.

Benefits of Eating Apples Every Day

  • It helps in shedding weight

If you have just started your weight loss journey, including apples in your daily diet is not bad. According to a study conducted in PubMed Central, apples keep you fuller and help in reducing your calorie intake, which ends weight loss.

  • Keeps your heart healthy

Apples can act like true friend when it comes to your heart’s health. This is because of the presence of fiber that is responsible for lowering the levels of cholesterol. Also, the micronutrient polyphenol can reduce the risk of heart strokes by balancing blood pressure.

  • Reduces the risk of cancer

According to research conducted by the National Institute of Health, the regular consumption of apples decreases the risk of cancer, especially lung cancer. In addition, another study by the same organization revealed that the regular consumption of apples is directly associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

  • Protection against Asthma

If you are the one suffering from the severe health issue of asthma, then apple may be a godsend food for you. The reason behind this is the phytochemical content (flavonoids) that works as a wonder for people who have asthma. Also, if pregnant women consume apples regularly, the chances of their children suffering from this chronic disease called asthma are meager.

However, it is time for a truth bomb. No, other fruit or vegetable can keep you healthy, not even apples. Also, besides apples, several fruits, such as strawberries, cranberries, and blueberries, have the same amount of antioxidants as apples. Also, beverages like tea and coffee contain many antioxidant flavonoids.

Fruits such as pears can also be considered a replacement for apples because of the same nutritional value. The second pitfall of the apples is that their skin alone contains several nutritional benefits. If you consume apples in the form of peeled apples or juice, you would be devoid of many nourishing benefits you could have obtained from its skin.

Also, if you consume too many apples, the fiber in them can cause issues such as stomach pain, gas, or bloating. Regular consumption of apples might keep you away from the pharmacist. But there is no evidence of it keeping you away from other diseases.
