Coronavirus is a matter of concern around the globe. Being clean is essential for an individual’s health. A person must take care of personal hygiene at every cost. The coronavirus pandemic highlights the importance of personal hygiene and a clean environment. Billions of pathogens exist in our surroundings.

The study confirms the theory of transmission of coronavirus by fomites, making the situation more drastic. The pandemic calls for maintenance of hygiene.

But, fortunately, only some can cause disease. Skin is the first organ that acts as a protective layer and inhibits pathogen entry into the body. The mucus secretion in the nasal cavity protects the body from pathogens that enter via air while we breathe.

Coronavirus is an enveloped positive-sense RNA virus, characterized by club-like spikes that project from their surface. The novel COVID-19 is a new strain of the coronaviruses. Furthermore, this new strain is more infectious and capable of causing severe illness in humans affecting their respiratory system.

Some common symptoms include fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Furthermore, less common symptoms include body aches, sore throat, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, and loss of taste or smell.

Coronavirus infection spreads from person-to-person through small droplets from the nose or mouth. Furthermore, these droplets come from COVID-19 patients when they cough, sneeze, or speak. However, these droplets are unable to travel far in the air and sink to the ground. That is why the 1-meter distance between individuals is safe.

However, people can get infected from the virus that exists on the surface of things like tables, doorknobs, handrails, and other surfaces.

Coronavirus On Different Surfaces

The droplets from the COVID-19 patient may land on the ground, but they can land on other surfaces too. These surfaces can be the medium for the transmission of the virus to other individuals. Furthermore, the coronavirus stays on different types of surfaces for different durations. Coronavirus exists on metal objects like jewelry and silverware for five days.

Moreover, the virus stays infectious for four days on wood items like wood appliances and decking.

The coronavirus is capable of staying for two to three days on plastic surfaces. Plastic surfaces include milk containers, soda bottles, detergent bottles, and subway and bus seats. Furthermore, backpacks and elevator buttons are sites where the coronavirus is likely to be present.

The virus exists on Cardboard, Copper, and Aluminum for 24hours, 4hours, 2-8hours, respectively. On glass, paper, and ceramic surfaces, the virus is present for five days. However, the latest study shows that COVID-19 can survive on banknotes, glassware, and stainless steel for 28 days.

Effective Cleaning And Washing Hands To Combat COVID-19

CSIRO is Australia’s national science agency. According to the research of CSIRO, COVID-19 remains infectious in a tightly controlled environment for a longer duration than previously found. The Virology Journal published the study.

According to CSIRO researchers, the SARS-COV-2 virus remains infectious at 20oC (68 degrees Fahrenheit) on smooth surfaces. However, the Influenza-A virus remained infectious on these surfaces for 17 days.

The study’s lead researcher Shane Riddle suggests that it is essential for one’s health to wash hands for 20 seconds. Furthermore, to sanitize whenever and wherever possible. Repeatedly wipe the surfaces where coronavirus is likely to be present. Additionally, the virus lasts longer on cold surfaces. However, the duration shortens as the surface temperature increases.

Besides, in the presence of light, the existence of the virus decreases to a small extent. However, the spread of infection depends upon multiple factors. The structure of the virus, type of surface, and physical state of the virus affect its transmission.
